I have two homestead land entry case files from Arkansas, and am
puzzled by some of the terminology (or whether I am interpreting the
clerk's messy handwriting correctly).

The one from 1900 says he has a "3 pen log barn." Does that mean
pens for animals, like 3 stalls?

The rest of the confusions are for the 1920 case. Crops are listed
and then it says "balance in Trench and Garden." What does "trench"
mean, or what might that word be?

It says "Pailed yard and Garden," and I would think that was "railed"
except it really looks like a "P."

Finally, it says "19 a chain [claimed?] of fenced and in cultivation
and 1 a fenced which is not chained [claimed?] " Is that "chain"
meaning measured with chains? Seems unlikely in a state land state
described in sections. Did they have some kind of chain fence in
1920?

Any suggestions for proper translation appreciated! Or, direct me to
an appropriate glossary.
