Dear Kathy,
The controversy is NOT about access to records. It is about baptism by proxy
and the IGI index which is an index to church ordnances, not an index to
original records.
Jewish genealogists and the International Association of Jewish Genealogical
Societies (IAJGS)have worked with the LDS in assisting in the microfilming of
records. In 2000, the LDS prepared a special index to Jewish records which is
available on CD-Rom through the IAJGS. There is a special guide (5 voulmes)
at the Family History library of this index.

The controversy deals with an agreement between major Jewish organizations and
the LDS which many Jews feel has not been kept or properly enforced by the LDS.

There are many Jews listed in the IGI. Most of them I have found have
incorrect information. In many of the names I have seen, the information is
inaccurate and was clearly taken from secondary sources; in many others, there
are no sources listed. So, users of the IGI can only use such listings as
clues to finding the proper documents.

As to descendants of Jews who are no longer Jewish, including many of my
dearly loved relatives, they should look to the LDS library catalog as well as
the massive amount of information available at <www.jewishgen.org> in order to
locate the proper documentation and information on their Jewish ancestors.
