Ah!! Now I understand, the Internet and the APG list are places where we
only discuss things where we have expertise.
Or should we caveat every opinion with the "but I am not a lawyer" caveat.
I believe that it is important as a professional genealogist to have a good
understanding of what "fair use" means, how to know when your copyright is
being violated and to know when you are violating someonelse's copyright,
and what to do about it.
An important component of making a living in genealogy is to publish. If you
don't know how to protect your sweat equity in your long term revenue
stream, you need to consider the consequences of your inattention.
You have to know when you need a lawyer and when you do not.
Now if a lawyer in the group would like to step in and talk about it. Oh,
but you can't. Unfortunately, lawyers are now being sued for providing
opinions to organizations that are outside of the state in which are
practicing.
