I see another subject I should add to the discussion in an upcoming class
I'm doing for Angelina College Genealogy Conference.
I have not researched the copyright law or the fair use act completely, only
asked a question months ago of the Copyright Office. Basically I was given to
understand that if I went to the library and found information that I
wanted/needed in a specific book I could make photocopy under the Fair Use Act. For
my own use; not for resale or to publish in that original form (records) or
words of the author. Of course, if I used any part of it as a reference in
another work I would have to credit the original work.
Second part, our library here will make photocopy of specific pages requested
by the corespondent .. perhaps someone who did not have time to make the
copies or simply failed to while they were visiting .. or someone who needs a
portion and, not having the book on their local level, found that we do have it.
Again, it is considered for personal use.
Charges - the normal photocopy cost if I were doing it myself + a fee for
handling ... the envelope, postage, a token amount for the staff member's time.
As an author/compiler I know that I like to sell books! But then, in today's
world I know that once a copy goes to a library that lessens my chance to sell
any number of copies - people will use it there instead of personally
purchasing.
I'm listening to the opinions coming in -
