Here are the specifics quoted from their site as to what they will copy:
"To Request Copies
You may request copies of pages from books in the Library. Fill out the Copy
Request Form and mail it to us. The conditions and fees are on the form."
The conditions and fees are:
"To obtain copies of pages in books in the Heritage Quest Research Library,
fill out this form and mail it to the address shown above. Four copy
requests (that is, one completed form) are allowed at a time. The charge is
$6.00 per form, pre-paid, plus $.25 per copy, plus postage, to be billed to
you. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped business size envelope."
Have I misunderstood that in reality this only includes index pages and
surnames?

Am I missing something here? This firm will copy index pages, and pages with
references to a specific surname for a fee. This is much like when we as
researchers go into libraries and archives and photocopy pages from books we
don't
have on our personal library shelves. The only difference I see is that this
firm is offering to do the copying for us. It's not offering entire books.
IMHO, this doesn't infringe on copyright laws anymore than when we make
copies ourselves. Oh, and one of my books is on this list. I can get
red-hot, as
this list has noted, when there is infringement. This doesn't seem to me to
be
one of those times.

I am no expert on the ins and outs of copyright law compliance
requirements. But before you publicly impugned the integrity of this
organization, did you ascertain whether or not HQRL is paying
appropriate fees to copyright holders? (Or am I crazy in believing that
such payments are a viable option in this type of situation?)
