I did have one of these contested files in my family. The widow had been
married before and could not prove a divorce before the marriage to the
veteran and with no PA marriage records in 1861 she could not prove a legal
marriage to the veteran. After much paperwork, affidavits from their
children and neighbors and due diligence to find the first scoundrel who
just up and left her, they declared that the first marriage had officially
ended and the second marriage was legal. But of course they came to these
conclusions just months after the poor widow had died destitute.

Yes, get the whole file. It makes fascinating reading.
