I've used the "How Much is That?" site also to figure
out the value of land sales in the early 1800s,
compared to what it would be today. If you go to the
root directory of their site you can get their other
links to figure out gold and english pounds etc.

To take this a step further you can see how much
everything cost, what people were paid for what job,
what hogs were selling for, etc at the National Bureau
of Economic Research
http://www.nber.org/databases/macrohistory/contents/index.html
Scroll to the bottom for your choices.
For example: In 1914 the average weekly pay for an
office worker was $19.18 by 1938 it was $34.19. If you
look at the "dat" file that lines up the year (and
sometimes month too) with the amount you may have to
stretch it with your mouse so the columns line up, but
a really useful and interesting site. You then could
use the "How much is that" site above to convert that
weekly pay to today. Fun huh?

You can easily ascertain whether the occupant drinks bitters in the morning and whiskey with his dinner, or pure water and nothing else If he drinks bitters you will find his garden full of weeds.
