I have a great book in my home library entitled "The Value of a Dollar,
1860-1989" edited by Scott Derks and published in 1994 by Gale Research,
Inc., Detroit. I picked it up for $2 at a library book sale. I highly
recommend it if still in print. It gives prices for all sorts of things
over the years. I have found it very helpful in analysis for research
reports.

You cannot get the actual cost of things, but you can find out the value of
a
dollar relative to today's dollar at
http://www.eh.net/hmit/ppowerusd/
which is the Economic History Resource Council (or similar name) If you use
estate inventories and sales, you can come up with some dollar amounts to
convert as well.
