Kevin, you've gotten excellent advice from George Handran and Helen Ullmann
already. But there are three other points that need to be emphasized.
1. Neither *NGSQ, the NEHGS *Register*, or TAG publish "reports." All of
these journals publish analytical essays. I'm assuming the confusion here
stems from the fact that the "reports" options within various software
programs include compiled genealogies, and some of the programs adapt the
NGSQ and Register numbering systems.
2. Your phrase "NGSQ Record" mixes peas and apples. The NGSQ Numbering
System has nothing to do with the NYG&B *Record*. NGSQ and the *Record* are
two separate journals and use different styles of numbering. The *Record*
house style is close to that of the *Register.* The NGSQ System has
distinctive differences, incorporating many modern adaptations that allow
for numbering the more-complex family situations that modern researchers
work with.
3. The NGSQ Numbering System and the Register Numbering System are the two
main systems in use today. Some software do still mix peas and apples by
referring to a "Modified Register" or "Record" style, but there is no such
style, system, or format today.
You mentioned having the *BCG Standards Manual* with its examples, and
George suggested the NGS guide by Curran, Crane, and Wray, which goes beyond
the examples found in the *BCG Standards Manual.* Both are excellent guides
that cover both systems. Additionally, Henry Hoff (Helen Ullmann's colleague
at the *Register*) has done a useful little booklet *Genealogical Writing in
the 21st Century,* which explains "Register Style."
