I'd like to join Eileen Polakoff and Nancy Coleman in thanking John Martino and his tireless group of volunteers. For this latest project, thanks are also due Brian Andersson, Commissioner of Records, and Kenneth Cobb, Director of the Municipal Archives of the City of New York, for making the records available to John's group.
I was not involved in this latest project, but did help in the past. In those projects data was typed by volunteers. However, in this case the printed indexes were scanned using OCR. Volunteers then did proofreading and editing.
As for Elizabeth's questions about the creation of indexes, Harry Macy, FASG, FGBS, wrote a wonderful article entitled "New York City Vital Records Research" which includes an explanation of the various indexes.
