Oday, you've convinced me! First of all, I'd
like to apologise to Suzanne. Rereading my
posting, it is harsher than I'd intended. In my
defence, I seem to have spent the past few months
serving as a "testbed" for spammers who are
trying out new ways around old defences. During
the Iraqi War, I attempted to sign up with a site
containing materiel from a correspondent in the
field with my son's Marine unit. I am fairly sure
it was this newspaper which sold my info to an
Internet porn site which relies on spam to drag
in new users.
That site was the source of countless
iterations of the SoBig virus that almost drowned
my inbox for a time. Lately, I've been getting
tons of weird, automated messages that seem to
slip past anything. Couple this with a bit of
recent trouble with one or two corporations whose
attitude to removing my contact information from
their lists, at my request, was basically "Hey,
we make money from this, so we should have the
right to cram it down your throat, buddy!" (NOT
an exact quote, of course, but that was their
attitude) and I have become a bit testy on the
subject.
I am recovering from a nasty virus which
seems to have left me perennially dehydrated,
thus with a more or less constant headache, and
I'm afraid my judgement failed me. Unlike a
letter, an e-mail is so quickly and easily sent
off that there is no "cooling off period" when
one becomes irritated. Something I need to keep
in mind in the future.
As I did note in my original posting, I
concede the validity of those postings that are
of use to some users, even if not to me. I am
convinced the rest of you are right on this one.
So, again, sorry for the outburst of irritation.
I didn't think this one through. Pretty
embarrassing, but I suspect we all have those
moments. Those of you who are lucky don't have
them in such a public forum, though. :<)
Ray
