My mother and her sister swapped names, in a mixed up way, and they were
baptized Catholics. But this was in Philadelphia, and maybe Yankee rules
are different? <g>
My mother's name was Marie Cecilia and she was born on 10 Nov -- at least
that's what her mother told her, she said. Her church baptismal record says
her name was Mary Jane (on the index) and the actual record says she was
Mary Johanna, born 7 Nov, baptized 24 Nov. This was in 1901, before civil
birth certificates were issued. Her sister was born 1911 and was baptized
Margaret Rose. She was called Mamie. She was underage when she wanted to go
to work, so she used my mother's baptismal certificate to get a job and
thereafter was known as Mary as well as Mame. My mother was married in the
Catholic Church and her marriage certificate from the church shows her name
as Marie Cecelia. Aunt Mame didn't have a Catholic wedding, so the Church
wasn't involved with that one.
