I don't recall seeing it mentioned or not, but in addition to Marian
Smith's articles on naturalization, check out John Newman's "American
Naturalization Processes and Procedures, 1790-1985" (published 1985) or
his expanded volume "American NAturalization Records 1790-1990." He
gives a rundown of the laws covering various circumstances at various
times. Specifically, until 1855, there was no specific law regarding
derivative citizenship for women who married citizens or whose husbands
became citizens. The situation of losing citizenship was in effect only
from 1907-1922. The law in 1922 to correct this allowed for a sort of
expedited process.
The list of laws covers a lot of other iffy situations -- woman whose
husband dies after declaring, wife of insane person, military personnel,
children, and so forth! Dry as dust, but imminently useful!!
