Elizabeth;
Oops! I'd better go wipe the egg from my
face. I guess I'd better not move to the South
and set myself up as a genealogist there, at
least without learning more than I now know...
;<)
ALthough, if Edwin Black's new book War
Against the Weak is correct, in the twentieth
century, Virginia passed a law banning marriages
between whites and nearly anyone with even a drop
of "non-white" blood (1/16 Indians were excepted,
since many of Virignia's prominent families
apparently boasted of descent from Pocahantas and
others). The state Registrar of Vital Records (or
whatever his official title was - the book is in
the other room, and I'm too lazy to go get it
just to provide a buffoon with his 'proper'
title) went around "annulling" marriages,
altering records to fit the facts he believed
true, etc. It is pretty interesting - and
appalling - reading. And certainly much of what
the book covers is of interests to anyone who
loves genealogy.
Ray
