Darlene,

Concerning the purchase of a GPS. I bought my husband one for hunting and
fishing in October, but he now has to take it away from me because it is
invaluable in documenting cemeteries in my county. I bought a Magellan Meridian
Color ($499.00) which is the most expensive of the series. They offer black and
white models for as little as $199. The one I bought can be plugged into the
cigarette lighter or electrical source in the car, has usb adapter for my
laptop, etc. I can download maps from the Topo site to the GPS, but it has what is
called a waypoint screen which will record your entire trip and store it in
the GPS.

When we go crashing through the trees and brambles on our cemetery search, it
takes about 15-30 seconds for the satellite systems to triangulate our
position. It also records elevation, distance from landmarks, etc. The only
drawback I've found is that the batteries are expensive so you have to be sure that
you power it down when not in use;the screen on the GPS starts out bright and
as a power-saver feature, the screen gets dimmer and dimmer the longer it is
on so you can't obviously tell you have the power on by just glancing at the
screen.

Many more features too numerous to list here. You might want to go to
www.magellangps.com to check out the choices. I bought it at a sporting goods store.
