Subject: Fw: [APG] Social Security Death Benefit
Date: Sat, 1 Nov 2003 22:00:23 -0500
The death benefit is only payable to the surviving spouse if he or she was living with the beneficiary at the time of death, OR if living apart, was eligible for Social Security benefits on the beneficiary's earnings record for the month of death. If there is no surviving spouse, the payment is made to a child who was eligible for benefits on the beneficiary's earnings record in the month of death. (In the case of the child it is usually a minor unless the child is disabled and was disabled prior to reaching the age of 22).
So in the vast majority of cases the death benefit was sent to the suriving spouse who was living with the deceased as the time of his or her death or the minor dependent child of the deceased.
Hope that helps a little.
