Subject: [APG] Disaster Planning

Thanks to all of you who responded. I will
be contacting one or two of you who offered
specific help off list. In the meantime, to
answer a few general questions.
First, there seems to be enough interest
that I think it is worthwhile to go ahead with
developing a 'model' plan.
Second, such a plan would include planning
for disasters which the planner themselves would
be recovering from, and also from the death of
the genealogist, whether alone or in some larger
disaster. Planning for death is necessary in
order to provide some protection to our clients.
In addition, I hope to develop a plan which
would include as many strategies as possible for
avoiding and / or surviving disasters of all
types. For many of us, it would not be possible
to incorporate all these strategies at once. In
fact, it might NEVER be possible to incorporate
all of them. But the point of a model plan is to
force some thought to be devoted to all relevant
issues, and to show the ideal way to handle those
issues.
It was suggested to me, off list, that I
share the results either through the APG
Quarterly, or through the APG web site. I would
be perfectly willing to do either one; in the
case of the APG Quarterly, I suspect the result I
envision (after looking over examples from other
fields) might be a problem in terms of length. Of
course, a file of any length could be posted to
the web site, but as I am not in charge of the
Web site, I am not the one to decide this. If
enough members are interested that the
administration is willing to consider posting my
model plan in this way, I am willing to do so.
As I noted, I will be doing much of the work
in my spare time, so I don't expect a finished
plan for a month or two (in fact, considering the
holiday season approaching, the most realistic
target date seems to me to be very early in the
new year - assuming my anticipated changeover to
a new computer system does not include any
unpleasant surprises...).
