At the "Searching the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) in One Step",
the default search engine is the one at Genealogy.com. You can switch
to the ROOTSWEB index by selecting ROOTSWEB from the "Search Engine to
use" drop down box. If you search using Genealogy.com, Donald Pence
returns 17 hits. If you switch to Rootsweb, Donald Pence returns 19
hits. I assume the Rootsweb index is more recent and, therefore, has
more names.
The One Step website does not allow you to search all five indexes at
once. You must search each index individually. When you switch search
engines using the "Search Engine to use" drop down box, the search
fields that are available on the search form will change.
Here is an example of the differences in search fields. If you select
the Family Tree Legends index, you can specify a range of years for
birth. If you select Rootsweb as the search engine, this search field
is struck through (i.e. not available). Rootsweb, however, allows you
to enter the first few letters of a first name. Family Tree Legends
requires that you enter the first name exactly as it will appear in the
index.
