Dear Barbara,
Just about everything basic you want to ask is at the
FAQ part of SSI on Ancestry:
http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/vital/ssdi/faq.htm#what
They supply links to government sites also for further
info. They tell you how to request more info from the
government once you have the SSN.
Also Cyndi's List is exhaustive and comprehensive
(naturally!) on this subject at:
http://www.cyndislist.com/socsec.htm
Note that records can vary in their completeness.
As for the search results mentioned in previous
postings. The data is supplied by the government and
is the same for all services. The structure and
design of the search engine is what varies.
Just for historical note, my maternal grandfather was
the Midwest regional Director for SSA until he retired
in ~1965.
All the best.
