Ellie,
Its very hard to respond to a query like yours without looking at your
research log.
When you say you searched through county records does that mean, for
example, you've read every single probate package in the county in the
relevant time frame or just those with surnames you now have?
That may be one of the steps you need to take as there are many wills that
mention people as heirs or witnesses not indexed in the calendars of wills.
Its a long tedious task, but surely fits into what one would consider a
"reasonably exhaustive" search of the extant records as suggested in the
Genealogical Proof Standard.

Subject: [APG] How To Find The Unnamed Spouse
Would anyone have any ideas for finding the "unnamed spouse?"
Many of us cousins has been "looking" for over 10 years for the wife of a
Revolutionary War patriot 5th great grandfather.. We have searched thru
county
records (Iredell Co. NC) and church records in MD.. to no avail.. The time
period of a marriage would be about 1770+.
Thanks,
Ellie S.
