APG Honors Helen F.M. Leary

The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) honored Helen F.M.
Leary, CG, CGL, FASG, FNGS, of Cary, North Carolina on May 28, 2003 for
her many "outstanding contributions" over the past quarter century to
the association and the genealogical community.

APG President Sherry Irvine, CGRS, FSA Scot, presented the Grahame T.
Smallwood Jr. Award of Merit to Leary at the group's luncheon in
Pittsburgh during the National Genealogical Society Conference in the
States. The association's Smallwood Award Committee selected the
recipient.

Leary is a Certified Genealogist (CG), Certified Genealogical Lecturer
(CGL), Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists (FASG) and Fellow
of the National Genealogical Society (FNGS) and was a member of the APG
Board from 1989-90 and 1992-93.

She regularly performs "continuing service" in leadership roles at
association functions, including its Professional Management Conference,
according to the Smallwood Committee. A mentor to many members, she
encourages professional activities through lectures, teaching
opportunities and personal contacts.

Leary played a major role in establishing written professional
standards, described in the The BCG Genealogical Standards Manual. She
has served as co-editor of North Carolina Research: Genealogy and Local
History and contributor to Professional Genealogy: A Manual of
Researchers, Writers, Editors, Lecturers and Librarians.

APG regularly presents the Smallwood Award, named after its first
recipient in 1981, to a member who has demonstrated personal commitment
and outstanding service to the association. APG, established in 1979, is
the leading worldwide professional organization of genealogists and
related professionals with more than 1,400 members.
