For Nancy Coleman,

>> this thread has sparked
my curiosity as I am about to prepare to apply to the DAR
myself (long overdue according to some people who have been
nagging me for years)... <<

As a volunteer genealogist for DAR, let me assure you that your
application there MAY be submitted on a computerized format on
the approved software provided by DAR to chapter registrars. I
assume you are in contact with a local chapter of DAR to provide
the sponsorship of your application - the registrar there is likely
to have the computer program, and the approved acid free paper, and
can complete it from whatever work sheets you provide - computerized
or not. HOWEVER, you will need to attach full documentation to every
genealogical event (birth, marriage, death dates and places) from yourself
back to the Rev War ancestor. That means copies of certificates, census
records, bible records, obituaries, etc. You may search DAR files
for other applications which may exist under the same ancestor to
see what approved documentation others may have used. You will also
need to REprove the military or patriot service from approved sources.

The chapter you plan to join will assist you in the preparation of
your paperwork, and provide the two sponsors to sign the application.
You are welcome to attend chapter meetings for a year as a
prospective member, while your paperwork is being completed and you
get to know the other members that way. If you have not yet connected
with a chapter near your home, I'd be happy to forward your name and
address and phone # to a local chapter which can contact you. Email
me privately about that, if you choose.

So DAR certainly DOES utilize today's technology in its application
process, but it's only the "frosting" part - all of the cake must be
created the good old-fashioned way from time-honored original
ingredients- one documented and proven fact at a time!
