I'm not at homeso can't give exact titles, but there are two sources for
maps showing the evolution of Virginia counties--one is a single volume
available from Iberian Publishing Company--it does not show the King George
Stafford County division correctly and there may be some other problems in
the Tidewater area.

The other is a set of map books available from Eric Grundset, 5200 Marvell
Lane, Fairfax, VA 22032. A single volume will cover a specific area of the
state--thus one does not necessarily have to purchase a complete set.

The WV archives used to have a series of xeroxed maps which did the same
thing for WV.

Although it doesn't cover the evolution of the counties or any waterways,
there is an excellent guide to Ohio towns. "Ohio Towns and Townships to
1900: A Location Guide" by Julie Minot Overton (Ohio Genealogical Society:
2000). Julie worked on this book for over 20 years, collecting towns, post
offices, abandoned towns, paper towns, alternate names, etc. from a variety
of sources. It gives the location by county and township, and gives a
description of the entry.

A typical entry is:
Newport (Adams/Meigs): hamlet laid out in 1819 on the west edge of the
township, with Wilson post office set up here in 1869.
