Subject: [APG] Benefits of Certification - pro and con

Dear Group,

I'm in the beginning stages of preparation to become a certified
genealogist.

I believe the main benefit of certification is the learning process
involved in preparing to be certified. It is an education unto itself.
That is my main goal, to learn more about being a better researcher
and to be more organized.

However, I have had some negative input from others about the
quest to be certified. They are saying

1. You never make enough of an income to make it worth the effort
it takes to be certified.

2. It doesn't make any difference, certification isn't any more
recognized as desirable from clients who desire to hire a
researcher than someone who is not.

I would like to hear from you folks that have been through the
process of applying and becoming certified. What would you say to
these negative statements?

Thanks much,
Joyce
