For those who want to do research in Hessen
Evangelical Church records, most records are
microfilmed and kept there.

My last correspondenz with them was in 2001, at which time

Hallo John,
I've been reading with interest your contributions and those of your correspondents on the Hessenland List and using these messages to sharpen up my genealogical German a bit!
Am forwarding a message I just posted to the German Surnames and Hesse Lists. I do not think it would be worthwhile to post on the Am-Rev-Hessians list and send it to you to see if you agree. Will welcome any comments, suggestions, or ideas you have for getting past this hurdle of locating church records in Germany today. Will happily post on the Am-Rev-Hessians List if I ever get reliable data on the provenance of Johannes Zulauf in Germany.
Haben Zie ein gut Tag,
Nelson R. Sulouff

Subject: ZULAUF-STOTZ
My immigrant ancestor, Johannes Zulauf, departed Hessen-Cassel 29 Feb 1776 in the Knyphausen Regiment on his way to America. He was born 1753. There are indications he was born in Hattendorf, northeast of Alsfeld, to Walter Zulauf (b. about 1722), a son of Adam Zulauf (b. about 1677) & wife Anna Kunnigunde Stotz (b. 7 Nov 1677), both parents also having been born in Hattendorf. The region around Alsfeld-Hattendorf was included within Hessen-Cassel during the years mentioned above, and more particularly it was within the recruiting area of the Knyphausen Regiment.
I am trying to learn where Evangelical church records for Alsfeld-Hattendorf, from between 1650 to 1750, would be found today in Germany.
When I use www.familysearch.org, it shows that Walter Zulauf was born "about 1722 Hattendorf, Hessen-Nassau, Preussen." In 1776 Hessen-Nassau was separate from Hessen-Cassel and both were clearly and totally separate from Prussia.
Can someone explain to me why the entry found in Family Search shows Walter Zulauf being born in Hessen-Nassau, Preussen? Is that entry confused, anachronistic and incorrect; or were there historical developments and boundary changes between 1722 and 1776 that make the entry entirely correct? If the latter, I would like to learn what the developments were.
Any help provided toward locating the old church records in Germany for my Zulauf-Stotz ancestors named above will be deeply appreciated.
