DAVID GILBERT 1827
The first real hard evidence of my Great Grandfather is in Marion Co., Al.
He and his wife Mary
bought land in Marion, Co. in 1859. We have found a David and Mary listed in
the 1860 U.S.
census in Marion County. With five children and a sixteen year old
housekeeper. The census lists
them as David and Mary Gilbert, both born in Georgia, both 30 years of age.
The children were
James J., Martha S., William, Jordan, and David W. Gilbert. The housekeeper
was Josephine
Swain. In 1870 census David is listed in Marion Co., Al., he is listed as 39
years old, born Georgia,
both parents born in N. Carolina, his wife was listed as a Martha. She is
listed as being born in
Alabama, age 34 years; both of her parents were born in Alabama. John age 8
years and Thomas age
7 months are added to the previous five children. Thomas was born 7 months
before July of 1870
when the census in Thornhill District of Marion Co., AL. were recorded. In
this case he would have
been born in 12/1869. In later census Thomas is listed with his date of
birth as 12/1870. This would
make him not born in time for the 1870 census. John was the last child
listed with his mother born in
Georgia, so he had to be the last child born to David and Mary.
The descendants of James J. Gilbert their oldest son have stated that James'
Mother is the Becca
Gilbert that is buried close the he and his wife's grave in The Church of
Christ Cemetery located in
Goldmine, Marion Co., Al. We do not know where David is buried. They also
stated Mary's maiden
name Mathis or Carnes. Also that Mary would not live with David because he
would not fight in the
Civil War. We know David and Mary had a Bible, and recorded all important
dates and events. I
would like to know more about David and his wife Mary's ancestors. Her
maiden name would help.
In searching for David's parents and siblings, we have found a David Gilbert
marrying Mary Ann
Carnes in Carrolton, Carroll Co., GA in 1850. Also a David Gilbert and a
Mary Gilbert are listed in
the 1850 Georgia US census in the house hold of Jacob Gilbert, someone has
written in the margin
the word twin after their names. They were both born in Ga., per census.
They both are listed as 19
at the time of the census. If in fact they were 17 he could be the son of
James M. Gilbert. James
died in Summterville, AL in April in 1850. He had a son David J. Gilbert age
17 at his death. I have
run across records of a David J. Gilbert in Walker Co., AL. records, but
gave them little or no
though at the time.
