Eric, You sure have your work cut out for you.
I had 3 ancestors who I know did a name change. One grandfather had changed
the family name to Tress, and I just found the correct family name (Teresi).
My grandmother's maiden name was Stedge, and I've yet to find any info on
web pages on that name (I'm thinking it might have been originally a
derivation of Staggs, since I saw stegge on one of their pages...closest
I've come). The last is my great-grandfather, who emigrated from Ireland.
When he left Ireland his name was O'Carroll, and when he got here, it had
magically changed to Carroll. No where near as hard as your search, but
there are a LOT of Carroll's out there too, lol (though interestingly, VERY
few from my hometown). Adding to that, both he and my Teresi ancestor had
first names that were WAY common among their eithnic groups (William Patrick
for the Irish one, and Anthony for the Italian one). So I joined the list
hoping to pick up useful info from those who have had successes.
