Hello! I'm always looking for information on my
great-great-great-great-great-grandfather William
REDMOND GODWIN.
He was born in the United Kingdom in about 1755. He
got into the British army somehow or other and came to
the United States. He is said to have deserted
Burgoyne's British army somewhere in New York, and
perhaps gone over to fight with the Americans.
He eventually settled in Oxford County, Maine. Between
those events, presumably to hide from the authorities,
he changed his name from REDMOND, to GODWIN, which was
said to have been his mother's name. REDMOND is
generally Irish, GODWIN generally English.
He kept the name GODWIN for the rest of his life and
all his children took it, many of them give *their*
children the middle name or nickname REDMOND.
Any ideas on finding him?
Best,
Jen Godwin
