Not true then or now. a young child's name can easily be changed by
enrolling them in school under the new name. My children were born with the
name Drain. When I remarried...I simply changed their name in school. All
their records for work, school, licenses, social security numbers and
everything is in the new name. It is not illegal to go under a different
name unless you are to hide a crime. They had only to explain this when
their birth certificate was required. One only has to explain to the Social
Security office why they want their card changed and they give you a name
change form.
