Book "Amos Fortune" by Elizabeth Yates, 1989. Amos FORTUNE who was born
of a king in the At-mun-shi tribe in Africa. In 1710, at the age of 15,
he was captured by slave traders and brought to Massachusetts, where he
was sold at auction. He bought his own freedom at the age of 60 and
subsequently bought the freedom of several others. He was an expert
tanner and when he died in 1801, he was one of the most respected
citizens of Jaffrey, New Hampshire. Today his tombstone can be found in
the volliage churchyard, a memorial to a man who was "born free in
Africa, a slave in American, who purchased his liberty, professed
Christianity, lived reputably, and died hopefully." This is a GRAND
book;
