Hello Ann,

My grandfather was working on the railways in Umtali in 1899, before he went
south to join the Boer War. He travelled from Umtali to Beira, then
Portuguese Eat Africa and now Mozambique, by train and then by ship to South
Africa. I think the Beira Umtali line was completed in 1897 and then pushed
through to Salisbury.

Regards, Chuck Osborne,
Durban, SA.
