I have been trying to look into the Boer War of 1899-1902 and am wondering
if there are any records pertaining to the British citizens or those
representing Britain somewhere. As I posted in another query recently about
Census of British citizens, I was trying to track my great-grandfather,
Harry Gustav Erber (aka Heinrich Johannes Christoph Gustav Erber--a born
German but with Swiss citizenship). From the family we know that he was
very fluent in 8 different languages--speaking 8 and reading/writing 5. It
is also told he was an Interpreter in the War for Britain (later becoming a
British Citizen in 1926 as both his wives and children were naturally born
in England). We always assumed the War the family referred to was WWI, but
his citizenship file states he did not serve in the military. But the
coincidence of his stays in S. Africa and visits to Denmark and Germany
in-between draw some attention (this information was taken from his
citizenship file):
In Freetown, Sierra Leone from Sept 1900-June 1901
In Denmark from February 1901 to April 1901 (north of Hamburg, Germany)
In Germany from April 1901 to August 1901
In Fernanado Po, West Africa from Feb 1902-July 1902
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
