My 3xg.grandfather,Ceasar Fitzgerald, born 1811-15 was according to family
tales, the son of a freed slave . On his marriage certificate he states that
his father was a " native of West Africa".
Caesar states on the ships details that he sailed on that he himself was
born in Sierra Leone. He was a ship's Steward.
I have records for him from 1843 until 1854. His death in our family bible
was entered as 1864.
My question is , are there any records of freed slaves ?If there are would
it possible to trace Caesar's father or would the surname , if any , be
different.
I am now well and truly stuck with my research. I can't go backwards via his
father and can't find Ceasar's death here in the UK
