Hello Rebecca

Thanks for writing.

I noticed that there hadn't been much traffic on this list, and assumed
there were few active members.

I may follow up your suggestion, simply out of curiosity about what happened
to John Mantell's wife. Also, since they married in 1838 and there was only
one child that I can find, born about 1850, it seemed unlikely that there
were no other children in those twelve years.

Since posting that query, I have managed to find more about him from a
published list of Barristers. This not only told me when he was born and
when he qualified, but alsoithat he had been the Chief Justice of the Gambia
for nearly 20 years.

Armed with this information, I found that he had been Knighted by Queen
Victoria for his service to Colonial Administration. So the broad outline of
my query is now complete.

By coincidence, I am an Australian too, even though I am currently living in
England. My family and I lived in Sherwood for eight years and my wife
taught at Corinda High School, so we have very happy memories of Brisbane.

Good luck with your research (and your toddlers!)

Kind regards

Philip Candy
