Now that I am working and living in Minnesota, I heard oot and aboot at
least 10 times today. I guess because we are too close to Canada.

Cynthia,

Here in NZ we have to put up with so much poor grammar, poor pronunciation
and much speech redundancy/tautology in the media. These people are supposed
to be the "benchmark", as media presenters, but fall far short of the mark.
Training received in secondary school [or lack of it] curricula must be a
major cause,

The above is a welcome rant on the vice of careless writing. (I consider
bad grammar and spelling as careless, since it is easy enough to find the
standard versions of what is meant.) We all have our pet hates; mine is the
confused use of "loose" for "lose". As this commentator says, when one
reads or hears careless English one is left in doubt as to the writers' or
speakers' competence in the exercise of their professional skills.
