I am familiar with the terms polecat and skunk, but also a civit cat. Is there a difference? Where did this term come from?

By the way I only get part of the ABOUT-WORDS listings. For days at a time I get nothing and then pick up in the middle of a conversation about a word that I never saw the first question.
