I'm with Bruce on the derivation of caramel.
The same word has been borrowed into Hebrew
but it has a Hebrew synonym: shin-zayin-fey
SHeZeF SuKaR, which means "brown(ed) sugar".
It probably tastes better if not completely
burnt. :-)
