[WVHAMPSH] Iron wrkers cemetery, Bloomery

Neil ,
Thanks you so much for the several sources with information on the Iron Workers Cemetery. I will follow up on that with a letter to Margaret McPhaul, the author of the book on that subject. There is no e-mail address so will do it the old-fashioned way! You have done a great job of research.
If anyone else has anything to add on this subject I would appreciate it greatly! I do not know if this settlement is where my ancestor worked in 1852 but he was an unskilled laborer in a small community of laborers in n.e. Hampshire and Bloomery seems to be the best bet.
Gratefully,
Ann
----- Original Message -----
From: wvhampsh-request@rootsweb.com
To: wvhampsh@rootsweb.com
Sent: Sunday, November 02, 2008 1:02 AM
Subject: WVHAMPSH Digest, Vol 3, Issue 43

Today's Topics:

1. The 250th Anniversary history of Hampshire County calls it Enoch's Mill Run.)

But other history accountings say Bloomery Iron Furnace is located near Forks of Capon where the North River joins the Cacapon River....less than a mile from the Cacapon....up a tributary, Bloomery Run (creek), where trolley cars could be loaded with pig iron and transported via rail to the Cacapon River, loaded onto flatboats, thence rafted northward to the Potomac and beyond:
http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=17&X=904&Y=5456&W=3&qs=%7cSlanesville%7cWV%7c
No old cemeteries are shown on the map near the furnace, where such an 'Iron Workers Cemetery' should have been located in my estimation. This makes me wonder if Iron Workers Cemetery is 'lost' as these USGS maps often show even small family cemetery plots -- as shown around the Forks of Cacapon area which is to the west, while the village of Bloomery is found by clicking the 'Southeast' arrow.

Hopefully a more knowledeable local historian will respond, the precise location of the furnace, village of Bloomery and the cemetery is still confusing to me....one book speaks of how the village of Bloomery is/was "distributed" or spread out along the road. Other maps indicate the 'main' part of Bloomery is/was where the church cemetery is shown.

I chanced upon a record in Sage and Jones which may concern my
ancestor Thomas Perrin, who ultimately lived in Allegany County,
Maryland, along Town Creek. The record is in the census section (page
95), and states that his presence was recorded by David Mitchell in
1782, and John Wilson in 1784.

The book states that by knowing the name of the census taker it should
be possible to identify where the person was living. Does anyone out
there know where Thomas would be living on the basis of the above
information?

Richard Perrin Day

Thanks to both Messrs. McCawley and Funkhouser for your response.

The text in full that started my inquiry is:

Hubert Parry. Memoirs of Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.
Madison, WI: Northwestern Historical Association, 1904. 2 vols.
Vol I: p. 274-5

from the Contemporary Bio of Hubert Paxton Wiggins (1904) of Indiana
Co.

Mr. Wiggins is descended, on his mother's side, from theCRAIGENs of
Scotland,
one of whom, Robert CRAIGEN, fought in the battle of Culloden, March
16, 1746,
and the ancestral line is as follows: Adelaide M. CRAIGEN, born in
Hampshire
county, W. Va.,Dec. 23, 1843, married Coulter WIGGINS, Aug. 15, 1868;
Jacob I.
CRAIGEN, born in Hardy county, W. Va., May 10, 1807, was a slave
holder at the
opening of the Civil War, but espoused the federal side, experienced
many
thrilling adventures, and now resides on the old farm at the age of
ninety-seven;
Eliza Sein PARSONS, born at Washington, D.C. in 1811, married Jacob
CRAIGEN,
April 3, 1833, and died Oct. 13, 1872; John CRAIGEN, born in
Winchester county,
Va., and died at the age of fifty-seven years; Mary LEE, native of
Hardy county,
W. Va., married John CRAIGEN and died in her eightieth year; Robert
CRAIGEN, born
in Scotland, emigrated to Maryland and finally located in Winchester
county, Va.;
Susanna PERRIN, native of Maryland, married Robert CRAIGEN; George LEE
and Keziah
BORGART, parents of Mary LEE, resided in Hardy county, W. Va.; Joseph
PARSONS,
father of Eliza Sein PARSONS, born at Rye Beach, Mass., moved to
Washington, D.C.,
and was a trader and merchant; Elizabeth Betsy MONROE, a native
ofWashington, D.C.,
and the wife of Joseph PARSONS.

I found this posted on the Pennsylvania GenWeb, and the misspelling of
Lee instead of See is also found in the original text.

As many of you have learned, such commentaries contain information of
uncertain validity. Both of you have pointed out that Lee should be
See, which is also the way the name is spelled in ancestry.com's
rendering of the census. Hopefully that is the only mistake in that
paragraph.

Richard Perrin Day

This includes
>
> 1.Robert Craigen, grantee of land in Hampshire County in 1773, and
> Frederick County Virginia in 1765. He also purchased a lot in
> Winchester in 1753.
>
> 2. son John Craigen apparently born 1769 in Winchester, married Mary
> Lee of Hardy County, dying 1827. He had been a Sheriff of Hardy County.
>
> 3. his son Jacob I. Craigen, born Hardy County 1807, married in
> Allegany Co. Maryland to Eliza Sein Parsons in 1833.
>
> My interest comes from a biography of a descendant, Hubert Paxton
> Wiggins of Indiana County, Pennsylvania, who states (in 1904) that
> Robert married Susannah Perrin of Maryland. A cursory look at
> internet data shows that John Craigen in his will mentions a daughter
> named Susan Perrin as well.
>
> While every fact I can easily find on the internet confirms this 1904
> biography, I am searching for someone who has studied this family
> better, and can allow me to firmly place Susannah Perrin as the second
> daughter of John Perrin, 1711-1769, of Frederick County, Maryland.
>
> Thanks in advance for your assistance.
>
> Richard Perrin Day
>
>
>
> -------------------------------
> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to
> WVHAMPSH-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the
> quotes in the subject and the body of the message

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No virus found in this incoming message.
Checked by AVG - http://www.avg.com
Version: 8.0.173 / Virus Database: 270.8.0/1717 - Release Date: 10/9/2008
4:56 PM
