It was your website that introduced me
to the Ropewalking mailing list. Most interesting, it made me think that
I am not alone in a drive for more Rope walking information.
> >
> "Would your ancestor Carlos Lamintine Trower have came from Africa? Have
> you found him in the 1881 census? This should give a place of birth. A
> link to check the census".
>
> In the 1881 census under the name of "Charles Frower age 31" his place of
> birth was recorded as New York. I am yet to confirm this, it could be
> that New York was more theatrical than the truth. However he was
> mentioned in the New York Clipper so I may be proven wrong. >
>
"While googling I cam across a mention of Carlos on this page".
>
> This book re-directed my research towards Rosherville Gardens and contact
> with the Rosherville historian, Lynda Smith. Gravesend Local history
> library holds a book called Gravesend in old photographs where Carlos is
> shown on the tightrope, I now have a copy at home. >
>

> Kind regards Ron >
>
>
> > -------------------------------
> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to
> WIREWALKING-ROPEWALKING-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe'
> without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Hi to all subscribers

One current and to all future subscribers who join this list. The subject of this list is about the aerobatic art or wire walking or rope walking. Sometimes referred to the high wire, but that is also a circus term. This list is not about Circuses, since there is already a list for that, but you may be researching someone who at one stage in there career, worked in a circus. This list topic is about the wire walkers or rope walker in the vain of the famous Charles Blondin.

My own connection is with my Grandmother's uncle James Alexander, born in Geelong, Victoria, Australia in 1860. He became known as the Australian Blondin, though there were other who were also billed in the same manner. I would say that James Alexander was the most famous of those referred to as the Australian Blondin. His career spanned from 1877 to at least 1900 and died in 1916 while doing a hirewire act at Bathurst, New South Wales. He toured all over Australia as well as America and New Zealand. I am still to determine if James Alexander is the same person who was billed as Henry L'Estrange whose career spanned from 1877 to 1880.

The other rope or wire walker who were billed as the Australian Blondin are:
Signor Vortelli, from South Australia, Career 1865-1867.
Henry L'Estrange, born 1842???, Fitzroy???
