<description>I haven't been there since last Jan but there was no mall now where the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Crossroads use to be...big hole where new condo are going in and the rest&#x3C;BR&#x3E;was being ripped down. Nearest shopping was at the end of the road where&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the Barnes/Noble is.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; A friend said she stayed across the steet at the old Renaissance and&#x3C;BR&#x3E;really liked it. I don't think that is the current name. She said the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;rooms were very nice as is the cafe. This is where the Salt Lake&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Institute stays each year in Jan. I don't know the prices. Close&#x3C;BR&#x3E;enough to walk even in horrid weather.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;E.Sloan&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E; Thank you kindly for all the information. I had thought that the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Plaza was bought by the Church and was solely for their use. I&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; checked on the Plaza just now and unfortunately they are booked for a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; portion of the time I would want to stay. I have stayed at the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Carlton several times but I wanted something else this time. I had&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; heard good things about the Crystal Inn but I worried about the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; pickup/delivery to the FHL. So I guess I am back to square one. <description>Four years ago I went with a group to SLC and we stayed at the Carlton Hotel&#x3C;BR&#x3E;on South Temple. It was an older refurbished hotel a few blocks from the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;library. There was airport pick up and one or two vans a day back and forth&#x3C;BR&#x3E;to the library. They served a full breakfast. I know the group still went&#x3C;BR&#x3E;there about a year ago. I thought it was fine.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Barbara&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;----- Original Message ----- &#x3C;BR&#x3E;From: &#x22;Mary Jefferson&#x22; &#x3C;knittingrandma@ak.net&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;To: &#x3C;GEN-TRAVEL-US@rootsweb.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sent: Monday, July 28, 2008 2:12 AM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Subject: [GEN-TRAVEL-US] Salt Lake City Hotels/Motels&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Has anyone on the list been to Salt Lake City recently? <description>Hi,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I go about four times a year and always stay at the Salt Lake Plaza which&#x3C;BR&#x3E;is right next door. It is also across the street from the light rail&#x3C;BR&#x3E;cars. They have the shuttle to and from the airport and a J.B's cafe is&#x3C;BR&#x3E;attached. Not the best eating place in the world but convenient,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;especially if you are there is snowy weather like I was last January. If&#x3C;BR&#x3E;you stay either four night you get the fifth night free, or maybe it is&#x3C;BR&#x3E;if you stay five nights you get the sixth night free. I can't recall.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;They also have a genealogy package but we think it costs more for what you&#x3C;BR&#x3E;get. Pleasant staff but of course, the best thing is the location.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Friends stayed several blocks away last year at the Shiloh and got a $99 a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;night rate and had a hot breakfast included. But that was in the winter&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and the snow did them in. Also, their room wasn't that comfortable.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;A group from here drove up last year and stayed at the Crystal Inn. Two&#x3C;BR&#x3E;of them really liked it and the other two disliked it thinking it wasn't&#x3C;BR&#x3E;that clean and the shuttle service wasn't that good...like one night the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;bus never came for them. They had a lady with them who had a disability&#x3C;BR&#x3E;so walking anywhere was out of the question. It is also located right by&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the freeway and therefore, some of the rooms are noisy.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The Marriott is about a block down the street and has nice room but at a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;much higher price. They also have a shuttle. Better place to eat also&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and Starbucks in the lobby.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;For me the fact the Plaza is right next to the library and is affordable&#x3C;BR&#x3E;is the selling point. When my mom was alive, if she needed a nap or break&#x3C;BR&#x3E;we could wander back to the room and then return later. I find if I am&#x3C;BR&#x3E;further away from the library I tend not to return. The fact that the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;rail is right out the door is also nice, especially on Sunday when you&#x3C;BR&#x3E;might want to go to a movie or shopping center.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I am not quoting prices since they do have the free nights/packages/ and&#x3C;BR&#x3E;other things. We already have our rooms books for Jan 1 and are paying&#x3C;BR&#x3E;$89 a room. My room is king/sitting area looking over the trolley (these&#x3C;BR&#x3E;rooms are larger on this side. My friends are sharing a double for the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;same price. Oh, all rooms now have microwaves and refrigerators.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Anyway questions, just let me know. I am a cheerleader for the Plaza now&#x3C;BR&#x3E;that the powers that be ripped down my favorite, Inn at Temple Square.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E; Has anyone on the list been to Salt Lake City recently? <description>Mary, I was in SLC late spring last year. I stayed at the Howard Johnson's &#x3C;BR&#x3E;which was about a three block walk, which I need and enjoy. I did not take &#x3C;BR&#x3E;my laptop because it was new to me at the time, but was exceedingly pleased &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to find that the library itself was in the processing of &#x22;going live&#x22;, if &#x3C;BR&#x3E;you will, with internet connections and asking for feedback from the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;patrons as to how things were working for them.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Howard Johnson's, while a bit further away from the library than many &#x3C;BR&#x3E;people like, was very accommodating. Because I was a lone female they put &#x3C;BR&#x3E;me in an inside room, closer to the office. The office area had computer &#x3C;BR&#x3E;access for anyone who wanted it (I used that to check email, but not for &#x3C;BR&#x3E;genealogy purposes). I thought the room quite reasonable and the staff and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;management were friendly and helpful. The hotel picks you up from the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;airport and will take you back. They have cereal, fruit, doughnuts, yogurt &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and such for breakfast. I would pick up a piece of fruit and take it along &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to the library with me for a mid-morning snack.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Rather than carry my briefcase to the library everyday, I bought a luggage &#x3C;BR&#x3E;carrier at the airport, which made my daily walk much nicer. Also, just so &#x3C;BR&#x3E;you know. I usually stayed at the library until they closed or I couldn't &#x3C;BR&#x3E;focus any longer. It was about dusk or just after - I had no problems in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;terms of people. No one approached me or even spoke, though I had lots of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;smiles and nods.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;When I go to SLC I am very focused on genealogy, but I also like to get out &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and walk and look at the changes they have made, not all necessarily for &#x3C;BR&#x3E;the better. The Howard Johnson site is available on line, and it might be &#x3C;BR&#x3E;a good idea to check the current prices of the various hotels online before &#x3C;BR&#x3E;you commit to one.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Ann Minter&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;At 01:14 AM 7/28/2008 -0600, you wrote:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;Today's Topics:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; 1. <title>[GEN-TRAVEL-US] Roots &#x26; Routes</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/GEN-TRAVEL-US/2007-03/1173708600</link>
<description> &#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Lois:&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;I just, for the first time, went into Roots &#x26; Routes and read the letter &#x3C;BR&#x3E;from the girl traveling from CT to OH. It was so interesting. I will, now, go &#x3C;BR&#x3E;back to it often. I hope you are not doing away with these letters.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Ann in NJ&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;In a message dated 3/12/2007 9:35:41 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;oldnews@bway.net writes:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Pat,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If you are unable to find a new administrator, I would be glad&#x3C;BR&#x3E;to absorb the duties as part of ROOTS &#x26; ROUTES -&#x3C;BR&#x3E;www.rootsandroutes.net. We are in the process of redesigning&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the website and will be ending the letters column as it&#x3C;BR&#x3E;presently exists in order. Instead, I plan to create a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;genealogy-travel related forum.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Of course, it would not be part of rootsweb, so may not fill the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;bill.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Lois Cunniff&#x3C;BR&#x3E;ROOTS &#x26; ROUTES&#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.rootsandroutes.net&#x3C;BR&#x3E;212-477-5055&#x3C;BR&#x3E;oldnews@bway.net _mailto:oldnews@bway.net_ (mailto:oldnews@bway.net) &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;__________________________________________________________&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;**************************************&#x3C;BR&#x3E; AOL now offers free &#x3C;BR&#x3E;email to everyone.
