I am researching my Cornish
> forebears - BENNETTS of Trewellard, CROWL of St Stephen in Brannel,
> TREGASKIS of Gwennap, LEWIS of Illogan and Swansea, Wales, FRIGGENS of
> Gulval and Bojewyan, FRENCH of St Winnow, WARREN of St Just in Penwith,
> FRETHY of West Penwith and Peranzabuloe, MILLETT, LUKE, LEAN. OLIVER,
> REYNOLDS, GARLAND, TRUTHWALL (MICHELL), EDWARDS of Gwennap Highway and
> PADDY of Falmouth / Mylor. My great-grandmother, Elizabeth Friggens
> BENNETTS was born in Trewellard in 1838 and emigrated to Australia, as
> did her brother, George Borlase BENNETTS. My CROWL family moved to
> Devon and emigrated from there to Austrlaia in 1849. The TREGASKIS
> family emigrated to Australia in 1855. The FRENCH family emigrated to
> van Diemen's Land (later Tasmania) in 1831.
>
> I would be very interested to correspond with those interested in the
> above families. The various families mentioned are on both the maternal
> and paternal sides of the family. I am particularly interested in
> trying to find out more about the parents of my
> great-great-great-grandmother, Joanna PADDY, (born 1784) who married
> John LEWIS in Falmouth in 1811. Joanna's parents were apparently Edward
> PADDY and Mary ROWLING, who married in Falmouth in 1771.
>
> Regarding the similarity of patterns seen in various parts of the world
> to Celtic patterns, this may also have arisen because those who make
> designs can invent patterns similar to those invented elsewhere,
> without necessarily having seen prototype examples. With a limited
> number of motifs it is possible to invent endless combinations of
> surface patterns and designs, such as in the book by Aldolfo
> Best-Maugard in about 1926, A Method of Creative Design. On the other
> hand, there has been interaction between the East and the West over
> several thousand years, at least, with many opportunities to cross
> pollinate patterns. These thoughts are my opinions, having been
> interested in the process of pattern making since my early teenage
> years.
>
> Best wishes
>
> Gael in Oz
>
>
>
> -------------------------------
> Subscribe to digest by sending an email to CORNISH-D-request@rootsweb.com
> with the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject line and body text.
Interesting stuff under this URL.

I suppose it should not be surprising to find genealogical connections
between European Celts and people in central Asia. We should bear in
mind that the proposed "Mitochondrial Eve" most likely lived in the
Great Rift Valley in Kenya, meaning that we all ultimately came out of
Africa (though the remains found of those early hominids obviously give
no indication whatever of their hair or skin colouring, and these
features have clearly changed many times since they spread out of
Africa into Asia and Europe). Our own more recent ancestors, the
Aryans, came from somewhere around the Himalayas, and if people moved
first from Africa to Asia, and then from central Asia to Europe, I see
no reason why their descendants should not have moved in the other
direction, probably on several occasions. Several major movements of
people into previously human-free environments have taken place over
time, some surprisingly recent, such as the indigenous North American
peoples (around 10-11,000 years ago?) and the Polynesian peoples (some
only a few centuries back, e.g. to New Zealand). By comparison the
Australian aborigines (60-40,000 years ago) are comparatively ancient.

For those among our number who accept the chronology of the late Bishop
Ussher and disagree strongly with all this -- tough!

On 21 Aug 2008, at 3:55 AM, A F wrote:

> check out this website or just 'search' under
> "ancient celts and china"
>
> http://www.giftofireland.com/Articlethree.htm
>
> --- On Sun, 8/10/08, Mary Jo Harper <mjoharper@comcast.net> wrote:
>
>> From: Mary Jo Harper <mjoharper@comcast.net>
>> Subject: [CORNISH] Celts and Mongolia?
>> To: CORNISH@rootsweb.com
>> Date: Sunday, August 10, 2008, 3:45 AM
>> Fascinating. I'm interested lately in the history and culture of
>> Asia, and am reading one little children's book (you can often get
>> the best basic sense of things from books written for children),
>> _Northern Asia, Understanding Geography & History Through Art_.
>>
>> The first article is on Mongolia, including how they have and still
>> do make felt for many purposes, e.g. their housing as well as their
>> clothes, etc. There is a traditional set of embroidered designs they
>> make on their felts, and a picture of these designs is included.
>>
>> Imagine my amazement to see that the six quilting patterns shown are
>> almost exactly Celtish! Really! The endless knot, what they call
>> the "shou" motif, the running dog, the fret, the spiral and the
>> flower. As these are geometric patterns I suppose they arise in many
>> places in the world, but I was certainly startled to see what I
>> treasure as Celtic belonging to another culture entirely.
>>
>> Does anyone know the history of Celtic designs? I used to have some
>> wonderful books, with many pictures, on the Celts, but I let them all
>> go last year when I moved.
>>
>> mj
>>
>> Mary Jo Harper
>> mjoharper@comcast.net
>> Near Portland, Oregon
