Generally you will find shipping lists at the state government archives in whatever state the passengers came to. Queensland, NSW and Victoria have indexes to their passenger lists online. There are German lists which are not included and the Magdalena sounds as if it is in that group. Eric and Rosemary Kopittke have indexed German lists from Hamburg lists. These records may be found on their CD, Emigrants from Hamburg to Australasia 1850-1879.
It's a good idea to have some idea of when your family arrived. The Duke of Sutherland made about 20 trips to Queensland and it is not unusual to find many passengers over a period of time with the same name. Be prepared to look at the lists for other states too. Newspapers at the port of arrival often had news items about the ships and passengers. State Library of Queensland has an index of a number of reports from lots of newspapers and other sources. Ian Nicholson's Log of Logs in 3 volumes also has some interesting items.
The National Library is digitising Australian newspapers including the Brisbane one. Check their website at www.nla.gov.au Half way down on the right hand side of the main page is the entry to the Australian newspaper project. It does not always pick up the words because the film from which it was scnned is so indistinct.
Incidentally you will find a picture of the Duke of Sutherland in Will Lawson's book Pacific Steamers and a picture of the Nagpore in the Courier Mail 28 April 1934 p 18 in an article recalling the history of some of the vessels by A G Davies. I've been interested in these ships at times.
Â
Cheers
Â
Brian Jones

--- On Mon, 5/1/09, B & J Hartley <barjeanzoe@aanet.com.au> wrote:

From: B & J Hartley <barjeanzoe@aanet.com.au>
Subject: [AUS-QLD] Ships
To: aus-qld@rootsweb.com
Received: Monday, 5 January, 2009, 12:06 PM

Hello all,
Can anyone tell me what to research to find the details of the ships that my ancestors travelled to Australia on?
They are the Nagpore, the Duke of Sunderland and the Magdalena.
I'm especially looking for passenger lists.
Thanks
Jeanette
             Â
-------------------------------
To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-QLD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Stay connected to the people that matter most with a smarter inbox.

I am forwarding this enquiry on behalf of someone who lives in Hungary.

Egon and Eva DE MAHR lived at 1 Cabana Boulevard, Benowa QLD, from
the mid-1980s (perhaps earlier) until about 2005. They are thought
to have had at least one child (born early 1950s), but nothing more
is known about him/her.

I know this is a 'long shot', but I wonder whether someone on this
list may have been friends or neighbours of the DE MAHR family, and
could tell me more about them so that I can forward the information
to the person in Hungary.

Judy
