Is anyone connected to this family? Found on the 1860 Census for Franklin
Co., Alabama:
Claborn S. Townsend, age 34, physician
Louisa J. Townsend, age 23 (I presume this is his wife)
Laura A. Townsend, age 5
Cullen C. Townsend, age 3 (could be 3 months old)

Claborn (or Clayborn) dies about 1863.
On the 1870 Census I find Eliza Townsend listed with children Laura A, age
14 and Cullen C., age 10. In addition there is another child Lula, age 8.

I'm trying to determine whether this mother is Louisa or Eliza.

In the Confederate Pension Application Records, Laura identifies herself as
Annie Laura Townsend Grisham (she married Joseph Benjamin Grisham in 1871).

Bea Barton
_fiebar@aol.com_ (mailto:fiebar@aol.com)

**************New MapQuest Local shows what's happening at your destination.
Dining, Movies, Events, News & more.
Louise,

Thank you for the email address and information.

I have recently (June) began searching for my ancestors, Cheek and Burgess families. I noticed that some of them lived at one time or another in Franklin County, AL. I was hoping that maybe I could learn more about my family through this group.

William (Martin--possibly his middle name) Cheek (b. 9-29-1752) married 3 times and had 15 children. I am descended from William's
and Priscilla Ann Sartain, his second wife's son, Rowland Cheek (b. 1797). Rowland married an unknown Henrietta and they had a son named John Manson D. Cheek (b. 1825). John MD Cheek married 2 times. First time to Elizabeth Ann Glover and they had a son, Benjamin F. Cheek (b. 1848) and the second time to Violet M. Brown (b. 1830). John MD and Violet had a son, Jackson Dooley Cheek (b. 8-23-1857) and he married Texas Anna Sanders (b. 7-4-1866). Jackson and Violet were my great grandparents. They lived mostly in GA but also lived in Franklin Co. AL. I do not know where Texas was born. Jackson and Violet had 4 children, but only 3 survived to adulthood. One was my grandfather, William Andy Romiel Cheek (b. 5-21-1887). Andy married Trilla Burgess (b. 6-30- 1894). According to the 1900 census, Trilla's father Holman Freeman Burgess lived in Coles Mill, Franklin Co. AL. as did Jackson Dooley Cheek, his wife, Violet, their 3 children, William Andy Romiel, Arletha Caroline, Annye Maxy, and 2 nephews, John Manson D. and Willie Cheek. William Andy and Trilla had 7 children but only 5 made it to adulthood. One was my dad, Harold Lockwood Cheek.
John Manson D. Cheek b. 1882 married Mattie Raper b. 1892. in the 1920 census, he and his wife and two children Andy Dillard and Jay M. Cheek lived in Hodges, Franklin, AL. I have been in touch with Andy Dillard's son, John and grandson, Kevin who live in Phil Campbell, AL. We are trying to find out about Manson (b. 1882) and Willie's mother, Ritter Cheek.

Later by the 1910 census, the Cheek family moved to Marion Co., AL. then by 1920 were living in GA.

I do not know where or when John M. D. Cheek (b. 1825) died or where he is buried. Nor do I know anything about his wife, Violet other than her birth year, and that she and her husband had a son, Jackson Dooley. ( I have a picture of them but not really any other information except through census records of residences.)

I was told by an aunt (now deceased) that Jackson had a sister, Edwinney B. Cheek (b. Feb. 1861) who married a John Holland. In my great grandfather's 1939 obit, she is identified as Mrs. E.B. Holland living in Hamilton, AL. I am unable to find any census records on her as having been born or living. (I do have a picture of her, her husband and three of her children but that is all.) So I am looking for information on her as well.

Any information on these individuals, or where I might find information would greatly be appreciated.

Betty, told me about Wallace State Community College. I plan to try that soon.

Thank you for sending me the contact about the Broughton name.

Sincerely,

Erlinda Broughton

I have received 2 emails from this group(
>> 8/6)
>> one acknowledging my request to join and another welcoming me. I have not
>> posted anything yet, or sent any email to anyone in the group since I
>> donot
>> know anyone.
>>
>> I did receive an email from Marjorie Cummings giving a new email address.
>> I
>> only read it and did not reply to it.
>>
>> I am not the one who gave any information to anyone. You are the second
>> person from the group (Ms. Cummings being the first) who has sent me any
>> email and since I have only joined a few days ago and not made contact
>> with
>> anyone, I feel you must be in error.
>>
>> Sincerely,
>>
>> E.
