I suspect there may have been an incomplete transcription of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;the entry, because from the way he was described in 1841 and 1851, there &#x3C;BR&#x3E;is no chance that he was actually a &#x22;Sheriff&#x22; in 1861!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The Sheriff, in Scotland, is a senior Judge, and presides over the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x22;Sheriff Court&#x22;, which is the principal court in each County, and deals &#x3C;BR&#x3E;with a wide variety of Civil and Criminal matters.  He is a trained &#x3C;BR&#x3E;lawyer or advocate, and will only be appointed to a sheriffdom after a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;considerable period spent working as a solicitor or barrister.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;A Sheriff Officer, on the other hand, is a much more lowly individual, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;whose job is to enforce judgements made by the Sheriff.  This obviously &#x3C;BR&#x3E;overlaps with some of the duties of a policeman.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Gavin Bell&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
